The voluntary agreement of the region with Třinecké železárny is fulfilled

In June 2022, Třinecké železárny committed to activities that will lead to a reduced environmental burden. Both the Moravian-Silesian Region and Třinecké železárny have fulfilled their commitments, according to the retrospective evaluation.

"Our region is still dealing with the consequences of a certain lack of interest of the environment state in the past. Fortunately, today people and businesses have a different attitude and different demands. There are also means to better protect our environment. One of the ways is the responsible approach of large companies, which have reduced the negative impact of their activities on the environment to a minimum by using the latest technology. I appreciate the fact that some companies are willing to do something beyond the obligations imposed by law," said the Governor of the Moravian-Silesian Region Ivo Vondrák and recalled that the Region currently has a voluntary agreement with a total of five large companies operating in the region. In addition to Třinecké železárny, BorsodChem MCHZ, Lenzing Biocel Paskov, OKK Koksovny and AL INVEST Břidličná have committed to activities beyond the scope of the legislation.

As part of the voluntary agreement, Třinecké železárny committed to a total of 15 measures. These include investments that will lead to the reduction of so-called fugitive dust emissions, additional measures on production units, and energy savings. But also the cleaning of public roads in the city, massive planting of greenery or the organisation of health stays in the Tatras for pupils of primary schools in the region.

"Last year, we equipped one of the blast furnaces throats with dust removal technology, including the installation of a new filtration station. Due to this, the dust in the vicinity of production unit is reduced. We are going to invest on the second blast furnace this year as well. In addition, we will process the dust from the new filtration units and return it to the production process, and thus we further reduce the amount of waste produced and increase the recycling rate," summarised Jan Czudek, CEO of Třinec železárny.

Last year the employees of the steelworks also planted two thousand of new leafy trees. The company spent nearly CZK 4 million on the maintenance on the existing greenery last year.

The Moravian-Silesian Region has also committed to activities that will have a positive impact on the environment as part of voluntary agreements. For example, the regional budget financially supports the cleaning of roads, contributes to the replacement of old boilers in households, supports regional air quality monitoring or supports municipalities in more efficient management of municipal waste.

"The Moravian-Silesian Region fulfilled its commitments to the letter. For example, it contributes an additional CZK 7,000 and a half to all successful applicants for the boiler subsidy. Last year, we paid CZK 3.4 million from the regional budget to replace non-ecological boilers. We have more than 18 million more ready for the following period between 2023 and 2025. We are also paying for excessive road cleaning beyond our legal obligations. We spend CZK 12 million annually on road cleaning in areas with poor air quality. In this way, we cleaned a total of 952 kilometres of regional roads during the warm half of the year, when dust is most intense," said Zdenka Němečková Crkvenjaš, the Moravian-Silesian Region's councillor for the environment, adding that the regional authority has defended its EMAS certificate and certified quality management system. This means that it minimises the negative impact of its operations on the environment and improves the quality of services to citizens.
